垂れ
Tare
剣道の「垂(たれ)」は、剣道防具の一部で、腰回りを保護し、姿勢や所作の美しさ、精神性を象徴するものです。

The tare (垂れ) is a waist and upper-thigh protector composed of overlapping padded panels, worn as part of standard kendo and naginata armor. Its design originates from lower-body armor worn by foot soldiers, adapted during the Edo period for use in dojo training. The tare protects the hips and lower abdomen while allowing unrestricted leg movement, which is essential for proper footwork and posture. Traditionally, the central panel of the tare bears the practitioner’s name or dojo affiliation, reinforcing identity, lineage, and accountability within the martial community. Beyond its protective function, the tare serves as a visible marker of belonging and discipline within the training environment.
