The tonfa is a striking weapon used in Okinawan Ryukyu kobudō, and it also functions as a form of protection. It is also known as the “senkon.” By gripping the handle and positioning it so that it covers the arm from the wrist to the elbow, you can block an opponent’s attacks in a way similar to karate, and then strike straight out from that position. You can also keep an attack blocked and counter with your free hand or with kicks. The longer shaft can be used like a club, or you can flip the tonfa by rotating your wrist and use the added momentum of the spin to strike the opponent. It is an excellent weapon that integrates both offense and defense.
