Vision

To revitalize lacquerware of Fukushima by way of a collaborative start-up and a share space for young crafts people, thus developing new products and markets and bolstering local tourism.

Biography

Born in 1967 in the historical town of Aizu Wakamatsu of Fukushima prefecture. After working in the corporate world for a number of years, Seki joined Sekibikodo, his family business that specializes in urushi* products, in 2003. In 2005, he established a commercial retail business called Bikodo featuring his own BITOWA brand and well-designed handmade craft works. Since becoming the third generation owner of his family company in 2007, he has established new urushi brands, such as NODATE and urushiol. Always forward-looking, Seki is striving to pass urushi culture down to the future generations by expanding its application in architecture, apparel, and accessories and by connecting it to local community.

Singapore Prize at Japanese Gift Contest (for urushi* iPhone cover)

Good Design Award for urushi* Glass

Special Award from Modern Way of Tea Association for NODATE

Nominated for J-Wave atelier nova DESIGN AWARD 2015 for NODATE 

Chosen as one of The Wonder 500 hosted by Ministry of Economy - NODATE
