襖や屏風などに貼られる加飾された和紙のことです。版木を使った木版摺りや伊勢型紙を使った捺版摺り、刷毛を使った引き染め、砂子手蒔きなど技法は多彩です。日本家屋の間仕切りである襖の装飾として発展を遂げました。もともとは平安時代に中国から渡来した紋唐紙を日本の和紙を地紙に模倣したものが始まりです。
Edo Karakami is a decorated Japanese paper that is attached to sliding doors and folding screens. There are a variety of techniques, such as rubbing using woodblocks, printing using Ise pattern paper, drawing using brushes, and sand sowing by hand. It developed as a decoration for fusuma, which is a partition in Japan houses. Originally, it began as a copy of washi paper that came from China during the Heian period.
