Edo Fude

In contrast to the “Katame Fude” (firm brush) made in the Kansai region, Tokyo brushes evolved into the current Edo-style “Sabaki Fude” thanks to the sankin-kōtai system during the Edo period, which brought craftsmen from across Japan to Edo, allowing various techniques and skills to be shared. The key difference is that while “Katame Fude” are used by breaking up about half to two-thirds of the tip, “Sabaki Fude” are characterized by using ink up to the base of the brush tip.
