Kurobane indigo dyeing

Kurobane Aizome is a dyed fabric that originated in Kurobane, Ohtawara City in Tochigi Prefecture. It is said that the founder of dyer, Shinbei Konya, embedded indigo jars in the land of Kurobane and started indigo dyeing around Bunka Bunsei era in 1804-1829.

The indigo color becomes darker and less prone to fading due to the preliminary dye of “Konzome (dark blue dye)” technique, which is made by mixing douzhi (soy milk from mung beans) and soot from burning pine tree roots.
