Kikko brocade

Kikkoori (Kikko meaning tortoise shell) is a linen fabric that has been made in Shizukuishi Town, Iwate Prefecture.

Threads are made from hemp and dyed using plants in the town of Shizukuishi. Kikkoori is characterized by entwining the warp threads with the weft threads to bring out the vivid hexagonal pattern. It was considered as a gift for samurais in the Nanbu Clan, and was also worn by the people as a “sweat repellent” underneath their work clothes.
